The HIV community can now give and receive the gift of life through transplantation. The passage of the HOPE Act has changed US law regarding organ donation. Persons living with HIV infection are now encouraged to consider becoming organ donors. The goal of the Hope Study Project is to optimize the transplantation of HIV+ patients with end stage kidney and liver failure through research that will help define the risks and benefits of accepting an organ allograft from an HIV+ donor. This study has the potential to decrease the waiting time for HIV+ transplant candidates, particularly kidney transplant candidates who have a significantly increased risk of death on the waiting list.
HOPE Act transplants will increase the organ donor pool for all organ transplant candidates.
