• Member Spotlight: Gail Williams, Owner of Williams McCall Gallery

  • Q: Please share with us a bit of your personal background.

A: I was born and raised in Philadelphia with three brothers.  My father retired as a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Judge and my mother was a Spanish teacher and retired as an education administrator.  I have lived in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, Laguna Beach, and Washington, DC.  My wife and I have had a home in Miami since 1994 and we love it here.  I was always interested in business and even though most of my career was spent in the corporate world, I knew I would have my own business one day.  After graduating from Wharton Undergrad with a major in marketing, I went into banking on Wall Street and then switched careers to join the nascent cable television industry and HBO in its infancy.  I took 2 years off to get an MBA from Harvard Business School and quickly returned to the cable television industry where  I enjoyed a long successful career as a senior marketing executive.   Pulled by an interest in investing and financial planning,  I became a Certified Financial Planner and reentered the banking world in wealth management.  After several years in this profession, I decided the time was right to pursue my dream to own an art gallery and the Williams McCall Gallery was born in February 2012.

Q: In your role as owner Williams McCall Gallery, please share with us a couple of interesting exhibits or artists you are proudest of working with.

A: We are proud of the unique mix of emerging, mid-career, and established artists we have worked with.  They are a diverse and immensely talented group of local and international artists creating contemporary paintings, works on paper, fine art photography, encaustic collage and sculpture.  Joan Cobb Marsh’s scenic and interior oil paintings have proven a collector favorite.  We are proud of bringing the work of Madeleine Abling to Miami.   She was selected as the Coconut Grove Arts Festival Poster Artist in 2016.  We are proud of bringing the work of John Dowd to Miami.  He is the top selling artist in Provincetown, MA.  We are proud of exhibiting the works of Cuban artists Enrigue Flores-Galbis and MANO, both who came to the United States as part of Operation Pedro Pan.  We are proud of the exhibits by Rubem Robierb, Dorothy Palanza, and others to raise funds for charities supporting Alzheimer’s research, pediatric heart disease and whale rescue.  We have an annual exhibit in our South Beach gallery called EXPANSE that allows us to exhibit and promote primarily local artists and mix a eclectic variety of styles and mediums. We have launched a similar initiative with our annual CocoArt exhibit in our Coconut Grove gallery.  We are proud of adding blue chip art to our mix and becoming one of the only galleries in South Florida where you can collect Mr. Brainwash.

Q: Art Basel is quickly approaching, what shows will be running at your gallery?

A: We have two exciting shows.  At our South Beach gallery, we are exhibiting Pop Art works by blue-chip artists Andy Warhol, Mr. Brainwash, and Donald Sultan.  In our Coconut Grove gallery, we are unveiling "Scopic Ciphers"a solo exhibition by local artist Elysa D. Batista.   A UM and Parsons graduate, Batista carves, cuts, and folds manipulated digital typography onto materials including wood and aluminum to dissect the manner in which preconceptions and prejudices vary across domestic and international spectrums.

Q: Any exciting announcements for 2018 you would like to tell us about?

A: Right now, we are planning a solo exhibition by Joan Cobb Marsh in March and curating the  EXPANSE 5.0 and CocoArt 2.0 shows.

Q: As a Business Member of MDGLCC, what makes the Chamber worthy of your support?

A: We are fortunate to have the MDGLCC and we are proud to be business members.  Their support of the community is extraordinary.  They play a vital role in keeping us informed, connected, and involved.  Thank you for all that you do!
