The Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce & GALLA presents its monthly networking program tailored for attorneys, judges and legal professionals held on the middle Wednesday of each month. Guest Speaker: David L. Barkey, (Southeastern Area Counsel & Religious Freedom Counsel with the Ani-Defamation League) providing CLE on "Hate Crimes: Laws, Features, and Trends".
CLE COURSE DESCRIPTION:
All Americans have a stake in effective response to violent bigotry. These crimes demand priority attention because of their special impact. Hate crimes are designed to intimidate the victim and members of the victim's community, leaving them feeling isolated, vulnerable, and unprotected by the law. Failure to address this unique type of crime could cause an isolated incident to explode into widespread community tension.
Topics covered in this seventy-five minute interactive continuing legal education course include, the Florida hate crimes law, the new federal hate crimes law, constitutionality of federal and state hate crimes laws, key features of hate crimes, hate crimes indicators, offender typology, and trends.
